The annual turnover of the readymade garments (RMG) industry in Bangladesh is now almost $20 billion;it employs around 4 million workers,more than 80% of them women. RMG account for nearly 80% of the countryís export earnings and are the second largest source of the nationís foreign currency after remittances.

We have witnessed the worst industrial disaster in Bangladesh , one beyond any wild calculation and more horrifying than we could even imagine. On April 24, 2013 another garment factory, Rana Plaza in Savar near the capital city of Bangladesh , Dhaka , suddenly turned into a mass grave. The death is over 1400.

Garment workers in Bangladesh haves wages lower than half that in competing countries in the region such as Cambodia, India and Vietnam.  Wages are not indexed to inflation.  Massive numbers of workers took to the streets in September 2013 to demand that the wages be raised from $40 to $100.
